There have been several big transitions for Adrianna we've been putting off until after our move and making the switch out of a crib was one of them. I know a 3.5 year old in a crib is generally unheard of, but she's always been happy in there and has never once tried to climb out. Why mess with it?
We planned on taking Adrianna's front rail off soon after our move, once we got settled, but the movers had other plans. They lost some of the hardware to the crib and the decision was pretty much made for us. We already had a bed rail so it wasn't a big deal... except the rail only works with a mattress and box spring, not a toddler bed (which is just a crib mattress). We decided to see if we needed something else before running out and buying a new rail or big bed. Her bed isn't all that far from the ground so we just put some blankets down the first night and waited to see what would happen. She was totally fine and didn't fall out (as far as I know, lol).
It's been a couple weeks now and she LOVES her toddler bed. I don't exactly love her busting into my room every morning as soon as the sun shines though.
We have custom bedding ordered and are working on resigning the girls' room, pics of that to come later.

She looks pretty darn happy to me!
